THE FIRST LNG STORAGE IN VIETNAM

04/11/2024

On October 28, 2019, the construction project for the Thị Vải LNG terminal officially commenced at the Cái Mép Industrial Zone, Bà Rịa - Vũng Tàu province, with PV Gas as the investor. This is a major and key project of Vietnam's Oil and Gas industry, implemented by a joint venture of Samsung C&T and PetroVietnam Technical Services Corporation (PTSC). This is also the first and largest, most modern LNG terminal in Vietnam at present.

What is LNG?

Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) is natural gas with a main component of methane (CH4) and a mixture of ethane (C2H6). LNG is colorless, odorless, non-toxic and non-corrosive. It is cooled to a liquid state at a temperature of about -162°C. LNG occupies about 1/1600 of the volume of natural gas at standard temperature and pressure, making transportation and storage relatively easy and safe.

The Thị Vải LNG Terminal is capable of receiving LNG carriers with a capacity of up to 85,000 tons. The main components of Phase 1 include LNG storage tanks with a capacity of 180,000 m3 and technological equipment designed according to the latest versions of Vietnamese standards and international standards... The total investment for Phase 1 is approximately 285 million USD.

The storage tank is the most complex and first-ever constructed item in Vietnam. The tank is built with prestressed concrete, over 38 meters high, 80 meters in diameter, and can withstand the temperature of liquefied LNG reaching -170 degrees Celsius inside.

According to PVGas's plan, the Thị Vải LNG terminal will be a crucial link in the supply of regasified gas, along with the investment in the Sơn Mỹ LNG import terminal with a total projected capacity of up to 10 million tons of LNG per year. In this, PV Gas is a co-owner with a majority stake.

On July 10, 2023, Vietnam Gas Corporation (PV Gas) will receive a shipment of 70,000 tons of liquefied natural gas (LNG) at the Thi Vai LNG Terminal. The nearly 70,000 tons of LNG will be transported from Bontang Port (Indonesia) to the Thi Vai LNG Terminal on the Maran Gas Achilles (Greek flag, with a capacity of approximately 174,000 m3). Previously, on May 5, 2023, the Ministry of Industry and Trade issued Decision No. 01/GCNĐĐK-BCT certifying Vietnam Gas Corporation - Joint Stock Company (PV GAS) as qualified to be an LNG exporter and importer. Thus, PV GAS has become the first entity in Vietnam to be recognized as having the necessary qualifications to export and import LNG.
