LNG GAS ELECTRICITY

What is LNG electricity?

LNG power generation uses liquefied natural gas (LNG) as the primary fuel to produce electricity.

LNG (short for Liquefied Natural Gas) is liquefied natural gas with a main component of CH4 - methane (accounting for about 95% of the total composition). LNG is colorless, odorless, non-toxic, and is cooled to -162°C to become liquid.

Why should we use LNG electricity?

ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY: Liquefied natural gas (LNG) is one of the environmentally friendly fuels. The combustion process of LNG emits very little CO2, NOx, and SO2 (estimated that using LNG as fuel helps reduce CO2 by 25%; NOx by 90% and SO2 by 98%, fine dust). In addition, LNG evaporates faster than oil and traditional heavy fuels when exposed to air, so it will not leave residue on water or land.

EASY TRANSPORTATION: When liquefied natural gas (LNG) is reduced in volume by 600 times compared to natural gas (NG), this allows LNG to be transported safely and economically by ship from the source of extraction to onshore storage terminals. Upon reaching the point of consumption, LNG is easily re-gasified into pure natural gas through a specialized vaporization system.

SAFETY USE: LNG is unlikely to ignite spontaneously on hot surfaces, as it has a high auto-ignition temperature and a narrow flammability range (5%-15%). This means that if the concentration of LNG in the air is below 5% or above 15%, it will not burn. This limitation makes spontaneous ignition or accidental combustion very difficult.

ECONOMIC EFFICIENCY: Liquefied natural gas (LNG) is expected to be competitively priced compared to heavy fuels such as petroleum and coal.

APPLICATIONS OF LNG

  • Electricity Generation: LNG is used to generate electricity at power plants. Energy from LNG helps ensure a stable and sustainable electricity supply, while reducing emissions and environmental pollution compared to traditional energy sources such as coal or oil.
  • Industry: LNG is widely used in industries such as steel production, food processing, fertilizer and chemical production. Using LNG in the production process helps to increase efficiency and reduce energy costs.
  • Receiving and storing LNG: LNG-powered electricity can be used to receive and store backup energy, helping to ensure a stable electricity supply in emergencies or when there is a shortage of power from traditional sources.
  • Domestic Use: In some countries, LNG is also used to power homes, helping to save costs and create a cleaner, greener living environment.
  • And some other applications.

Thanks to its outstanding advantages such as energy saving, greenhouse gas emission reduction, and safe transportation, LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) is increasingly attracting attention and being widely applied by countries in the clean and sustainable energy revolution.  Simultaneously, LNG-based electricity is also gradually asserting its position in the energy world. Vietnam is researching and implementing the application of this energy source in the national power system. With its strong advantages and potential for development, LNG-based electricity promises to be a pioneering solution for the country's sustainable energy future.
