BUTANE & PROPANE

19/10/2023

Butane and Propane are the two main components of LPG - Liquefied Petroleum Gas. Let's find out what are the above two compounds?

butane & propane

Butane is a hydrocarbon with the chemical formula C4H10. Butane is a gas at room temperature and atmospheric pressure. Butane is a colorless gas that is highly flammable and easily liquefies.

Propane is a hydrocarbon with the chemical formula C3H8, it is produced during the processing of petroleum or natural gas. Propane is a colorless, odorless gas.

Butane and Propane are found in associated gas (Associated gas when separated from crude oil during extraction consists of a mixture primarily of ethane (C2H6), propane (C3H8), butane (C4H10) and pentane (C5H10 ) and other impurities). They are also the two main components that make up LPG gas - liquefied petroleum gas.

Depending on customer needs, butane and propane will have different mixing ratios. In Vietnam as well as other countries in the region, the commonly used Gas is a Propane - Butane mixture with a mixing ratio of Propane 70% - Butane 30% and Propane 30% - Butane 70%.

  • The vapor pressure of propane is about 4 times that of butane.
  • When burned, Butane produces more CO2 than propane.
