NATURAL GAS RESERVES IN VIETNAM
12/11/2024
OVERVIEW OF THE WORLD'S NATURAL GAS RESERVES
The amount of gas is calculated from the amount of natural gas that can be recovered in mines that have been exploited or can be exploited according to technical criteria.
Currently, the total natural gas reserves in the world is estimated to be about 150 billion m³. Below are the 5 countries with the largest natural gas reserves in the world.
- Russia - Natural gas reserves: Estimated 47.798 billion m³
- Iran - Natural gas reserves: Estimated 33,980 billion m³
- Qatar - Natural gas reserves: Estimated 23.871 billion m³
- Saudi Arabia - Natural gas reserves: Estimated 15,910 billion m³
- USA - Natural gas reserves: Estimated 13.167 billion m³
NATURAL GAS RESERVES IN VIETNAM
Vietnam is one of the geographically located countries with great potential for gas with significant reserves. According to the latest updated information, natural gas reserves in Vietnam are estimated at more than 700 billion m³, ranking third in Southeast Asia (just behind Malaysia and Indonesia).
Since 1990, about 370 billion m3 of natural gas has the potential to be added, total gas volume reaching 394.7 billion m3. Of which, natural gas exists in the form of associated gas in oil fields of 324.8 billion m3

OPPORTUNITIES AND CHALLENGES OF NATURAL GAS IN VIETNAM
Opportunity:
Vietnam is a country with a favorable geographical location for gas exploitation and use. Except for the currently exploited mines, there are still many other potential gas fields that are not well known.
The trend of converting to using green energy sources is a trend in the energy industry today, especially when Vietnam is implementing COP 26 commitments (reducing greenhouse gases, enhancing the transition to green energy). renewable energy, and promoting global climate action). This is also a good opportunity to help promote the overall development and progress of the gas energy industry.
Challenge:
Oil fields that have been exploited for many years are showing signs of exhaustion, requiring new sources of exploitation to meet the country's consumption needs. In addition, the oil and gas energy industry also suffers many negative impacts from complex developments in the world (conflicts, wars, climate change,...)
IMPACT OF NATURAL GAS ON THE ENVIRONMENT.
From an environmental perspective, natural gas (NG) is a clean burning fuel, creating low CO2 emissions (about 20% - 50% less than heavy fuels). According to data from the IEA (International Energy Agency), natural gas emits 45% to 55% lower greenhouse gas emissions than coal when used to produce electricity. The combustion process of natural gas produces less fine particles and dust, contributing to reducing the greenhouse effect. In addition, using natural gas (NG) as fuel can replace traditional fuels such as wood, coal and some other organic substances, this is a solution to reduce illegal mining, deforestation, contributing to protecting the "green lungs" of the earth.
